Killaloe Coast Guard assists vessel in difficulty

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was called out this evening to assist the occupants of a vessel that suffered battery failure on Lough Derg.

At round 5.35pm, watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry was alerted to an incident near Killaloe.

A 17-foot powerboat was reported to be drifting without power about 1 kilometre north of Killaloe. There were four people on board.

A boat crew launched at 5.45pm from the Coast Guard base at Pier head in Killaloe. The rescue boat quickly located the vessel between Killaloe and Two Mile Gate.

All on board the casualty vessel were found to be safe and well and wearing life jackets. The skipper of the vessel informed the crew that his battery had died and they needed assistance.

A booster pack was used to start the boat and it was able to continue on its journey to Killaloe and the Coast Guard crew was stood down.
