ESB working to restore power after Storm Amy

7.25am – ESB Networks are working to restore power in areas affected by Storm Amy. Several homes and businesses remain without electricity in a number areas of the county.

Friday, October 3rd

9.42am – Met Éireann has now issued a Status Orange – Wind Warning for several counties including Clare.

Forecasters say that Storm Amy will bring ‘near gale force to gale force and very gusty southwest to west winds.’

They are warning that winds could result in fallen trees; damage to power lines and possible power outages; very difficult travelling conditions and possible wave overtopping.

The warning will come into effect at 2.00pm today (Friday) and remain in effect until 10.00pm.

Keith Leonard, National Director of the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, emphasised: “It is quite clear that we will have challenging weather conditions at local level in many counties. Local Authority severe weather teams are activated and are preparing for the storm’s approach.

“For those in areas affected, I would advise they pay attention to their local conditions and members of the public should monitor Met Éireann’s ongoing advice and act accordingly.  Even after the storm has passed, there is a possibility of road flooding or fallen trees so drivers are urged to take care in the aftermath of the storm.

“For all members of the public, whatever part of the country you are in, rain and winds will be a factor overnight and early tomorrow. I would urge you to stay away from coastal areas during this period and to heed the appeal from the Irish Coast Guard for people to ‘Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry”.

The NDFEM will continue to meet throughout this period.

Further public safety advice includes:

Orange warnings: The public are advised in those orange areas, to limit travel to essential  journeys and shelter in place as much as possible. Essential services operators will continue to operate subject to advice from Met Éireann on prevailing local conditions. 

If travel is necessary, take additional care when driving and lookout for pedestrians and cyclists

The forecasted winds have the capacity to bring severe, destructive and damaging gusts, be aware of the dangers of fallen trees and power lines.

High seas; the public are advised to stay away from coastal areas during this period. The Irish Coast Guard are appealing to people to “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry”. 

There is a potential for wave overtopping and tidal flooding in low-lying, exposed Atlantic coastal areas. In addition to this, the Storm Amy may also bring localised heavy showers, which in turn may lead to localised surface flooding, which may prevail into Saturday. 

The Electricity network may be impacted, the public are advised to prepare for the arrival of the storm including ensuring their mobile phone is fully charged to enable communication.

ESB Networks is highlighting the dangers posed by fallen live wires and is advising the public and the emergency services to stay away from these fallen cables and to report such cases to it immediately. ESB Emergency Services can be contacted at 1800 372 999. The public can monitor www.PowerCheck.ie.  In regards to power restoration times.

Thursday, October 2nd

9.12pm – A Status Yellow Rain Warning issued for Clare has now expired however it will be following by strong winds.

The warning has been issued for all of Ireland while some counties will be under an Orange alert.

Storm Amy is expected to bring strong to near gale force and gusty southwesterly winds.

This warning will take effect from midnight on Friday and remain in place until midday on Saturday.

The potential impacts of the storm include difficult travelling conditions; debris and loose objects displaced while trees could also be toppled.

Meanwhile, a Status Red Storm Warning has been issued for the Clare coastline.

The alert, which will come into effect at 2.00pm this Friday – remaining in place until 8.00pm, will affect coastal waters from Loop Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head.

Met Éireann says that southwest to west winds may reach violent storm force 11 at times.

3.55pm – Some businesses have already advised customers that they will close today and/or tomorrow as a result of the expected poor weather.

– Management at Doolin Cave say they will remain closed today (October 2nd) due to the bad weather conditions.

– Design Bank in Miltown Malbay will not open on Friday due to Storm Amy. Design Bank will open on Saturday as normal, with our opening hours of 11am-6pm.

9.16am – Extensive flooding reported on several routes around Clare while surface has also been reported on the M18 and N18 as well as other national primary routes.

Motorists are advised to slow down and drive with extreme caution.

9.10am – Status Red Storm Warning for Clare coastline.

The alert, which will come into effect at 2.00pm this Friday – remaining in place until 8.00pm, will affect coastal waters from Loop Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head.

Storm Amy is forecast to hit Ireland over the coming resulting in Status Yellow wind and rain warnings being issued for Thursday and Friday.

Met Éireann has issued two weather warnings which will affect Co Clare in the coming days.

A Status Yellow – Rain Warning has been issued for all of Munster including Clare as well as for Cavan, Donegal, Connacht and Longford.

Widespread rain, heavy at times is expected from 6.00am on Thursday, through the day until 8.00pm.

The likely impacts include localised flooding possible and difficult travelling conditions
