New Status Yellow low temperature warning for Clare

Thursday, 1.01pm – Another Status Yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning has been issued for Ireland.

The alert will take effect from 5.00pm today (Thursday) and will remain in place until 11.00am on Friday.

Met Éireann says it will be largely dry and clear tonight. It will be very cold with widespread sharp to severe frost, icy stretches and patches of fog. Lowest temperatures of -6 to -2 degrees with light southwest or variable breezes.

Thursday, 9.10am – Caution is urged on the roads this morning after temperatures as low as -7.3 were recorded in Clare overnight.

An Automatic Climate Station (ACS), located near the village of Tulla, reported a temperature of -7.3C at 3.30am this Thursday.

*The N68 Ennis to Kilrush road remains in a dangerous conditition particularly between Darragh and Knockalough.

*Conditions are also said to be dangerous on the Kilrush to Doonbeg road.

*Gardaí also say that road conditions on the N67 Ennistymon to Lisdoonvarna road are also poor.

*The R474 route from Ennis to Miltown Malbay is also said to be treacherous this morning.

 

*The Tulla Automatic Climate Station (ACS), located near the village of Tulla, reported a temperature of -5.3C at 11.00pm this evening. 

*The N68 Ennis to Kilrush road is reported to be in a dangerous condition particularly between Darragh and The Crossroads Pub at Knockalough.

*The R474 route from Ennis to Miltown Malbay is also said to be treacherous.

*A cargo flight from the US to Germany was forced to divert to Shannon Airport this evening. UPS flight 203 rerouted to Shannon because of severe weather in Cologne.

Snowfall in the Connolly are earlier this evening

Earlier: Snowfall has been reported in parts of West and North Clare this evening as a cold spell of weather continues to grip the county.

Heavy falls of snow have been reported on higher ground in the Ennistymon, Connolly, Kilmaley and Lissycasey areas.

The R474 route from Ennis to Miltown Malbay is reported to be in a very dangerous condition particularly between Kilmaley and The Hand. Temperatures have already dropped to -4C in the area which will likely make conditions even more dangerous overnight.

Clare will experience some of its coldest nights of the winter to date tonight and tomorrow night ahead of an anticipated return to milder and more unsettled conditions over the weekend.

The mercury levels dropped to -2.9c at Met Éireann’s synoptic station in Shannon Airport on Tuesday night with similar or lower readings expected over the next two nights.

Ireland is currently under the influence of a polar airmass with light northerly winds bringing showers of snow to Atlantic coastal counties and inland parts of Connacht and Ulster.

A Status Yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning is currently in place for County Clare and remains effective until midday tomorrow, although this alert is likely to extended into Friday.

Winter 2023-24 has generally brought above average temperatures and unsettled conditions to County Clare with the exception of a brief cold spell in December and the current cold snap.
