Two new initiatives aimed at increasing youth participation in sporting and recreational activities in Cloughleigh and the wider Ennis West area have been announced.
A six-week introductory kickboxing programme for teenagers is being held at Cloughleigh Community Centre in Davitt Terrace while the all-weather facility in Cloughleigh is hosting a Halloween Multi Activity Kids Camp from October 31st to November 2nd.
Organised by the Cloughleigh Residents and Development Group, the initiatives are being funded under the Community Support Fund by the Department of Rural and Community Development and administered through the Clare Local Community Development Committee (LCDC).
The ‘Kickboxing For Teenagers’ programme is being hosted by Ennis-based kickboxing coach Conor Murphy and is aimed particularly at teenagers, aged 13 to 17, living in the Ennis West area.
Meanwhile, next week’s Halloween Multi Activity Kids Camp for children aged 8 to 12 years will feature a range of sports and fun activities that will be hosted by Mark O’Donnell, Development Officer with Clare GAA and Elizabeth Mc Nicholas, Sport Development Officer with Clare Sports Partnership, as well as local community volunteers.
LCDC Chair Paul Patton acknowledged the importance to local community groups of accessing funding under the Community Support Fund and added, “The LCDC is committed to supporting community development initiatives throughout the county, and especially those with a focus on youth participation and engagement in recreational and sporting activity.”
Niamh Wiley, Rural & Community Development Officer (Ennis & North Clare) with Clare County Council commented, “We are delighted to support these community-based initiatives as they assist the needs of local voluntary groups in providing an outlet for younger people and establishing a template for future community initiatives.”
