A 4-month-old baby remains in a critical condition in hospital following a road traffic collision in Co Clare on Saturday.
The two car head-on collision occurred at around 5.00pm on the main Ennis to Kilrush road at Glaun, Lissycasey.
There were two males along with the mother and baby in one car and just the driver, an elderly woman, traveling in the second vehicle.
Fire and ambulance crews from Ennis and Kilrush attended the scene along with several Garda units.
Ambulance paramedics requested the services of the Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) air ambulance to airlift the mother and baby to hospital.
It’s understood the Air Corps operated helicopter was in the Limerick area at the time and reached the scene within minutes.
The infant was airlifted from the scene along with her mother who was also seriously injured in the crash.
Both were initially flown to University Hospital Limerick but the baby was later transferred to Temple St hospital in Dublin for specialist treatment.The other three casualties were taken to UHL by road ambulance.
The baby was reported to be in a ‘critical but stable’ condition while the other casualties were all said to be ‘comfortable’.
It’s understood that the occupants of one car were a family, thought to be Irish but living overseas, and had been visiting Clare.
The road was blocked by the collision and remained closed for over 18 hours until a technical examination could be carried out.
After spending almost five hours at the incident on Saturday night fire crews returned to the scene yesterday (Sunday) to undertaker a clean-up operation before the road be reopened.
Both vehicles were removed for a technical examination.
