A search for the occupants of a car found parked in the Burren National Park in Co Clare overnight has been stood down.

The vehicle was spotted close to the village of Carron last night and was seen parked in the same location this morning.

Concerned that the occupants might have lost their way while walking or hiking in the area, a search was mounted this morning.

Gardaí requested assistance from the Irish Coast Guard and a search of the area was carried out.

Volunteers from the Doolin unit of the service travelled to the scene and at around 11.30am, they located three men on top of a hill close to Poulacob.

It was soon established that it was their car that had been found parked and that they had gone camping on a nearby mountain for the night.

The Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter had also been requested to assist but was stood down once it was confirmed that all persons were accounted for.

The three men, understood to be Dutch nationals, were unaware that they were the subject of a search until they met with rescuers.

The area, part of the Burren National Park, is popular with walkers and hikers and is famous for its walking trails.
