Killaloe Coast Guard tows vessel to safety on Lough Derg

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was tasked on Wednesday evening to assist a vessel that suffered engine problems on Lough Derg.

The alarm was raised at around 7.00pm when the sole occupant of a 17-foot power boat was reported to have drifted into Tinarana Bay on the Clare shore in a strong South-westerly wind Force 5-6.

The skipper of the vessel dropped anchor and used Channel 16 on their marine VHF radio to call the Irish Coast Guard to request assistance.

Watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry alerted the Killaloe unit of the service.

A Killaloe Coast Guard boat crew launched from their base at Pier Head Killaloe at 7.15pm and was alongside the casualty vessel by 7:30pm.

A crew member was transferred on board the vessel and a stern tow line was set up. The boat was taken on tow back to Killaloe where it was safely moored with the assistance of a Coast Guard shore team.
