Rescue 115 airlifts injured man from Croagh Patrick

The crew of the Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter completed a medical evacuation on Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo this afternoon.

Rescue 115 was tasked to undertake the medevac as the Sligo based helicopter, Rescue 118, was tied up in another operation at the time.

Mayo Mountain Rescue was alerted by the National Ambulance Service at around 3.30pm and requested to respond to the incident.

Emergency call takers received a report of a man sustaining a head injury on the mountain. This man is believed to taken a fall half way down the cone of the mountain. The ‘cone’ is the last section of the challenging climb.

Mayo Mountain Rescue dispatched its full team including two first-responders.

Rescue 115 was dispatched from its base at Shannon Airport and was first to reach the scene.

The casualty was assessed and treated by Rescue 115’s winchman/paramedic and with the assistance of Mayo Mountain Rescue first responders, prepared the casualty to be airlifted to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.
