Update – Severe thunderstorm activity in parts of Clare

Monday, 9.50am – Power outages, originally reported across areas of central and east Clare, became more widespread overnight as thunderstorms affected more of the county particularly.

Affected areas include Querrin, Kilkee, Kilmihil, Corofin, Kilfenora, Kilnaboy, Ruan, Clarecastle and Whitegate in East Clare. Check the ESB Power Check page for updates.

Sunday, 11.40pm – Hundreds of homes have been left without power in parts of Clare as thunderstorms continue to make their way north over the middle of the county.

The affected areas include Drumquin, Inch, Ballycar, Clooney, Knappogue, Kilfilum, Tulla, Crusheen, Ballinruan, O’Briensbridge and Killaloe.

In the Ennis area, outages have been reported in Cahercalla, Roslevan, Knockanean and Spancill Hill.

A fault in the Broadford area has already been dealt with.

It’s expected that in most cases, power should be restored by 1.00am. Check the ESB Power Check page for updates.

Sunday, 11.30pm – A number of flights due in Shannon at around 10.30pm this evening were forced to deviate from their tracks and route to locations away from the airport to avoid severe thunderstorm activity.

A Ryanair service from Manchester to Shannon spent around 45 minutes circling over Kerry before making a successful approach and landing at around 11.15pm.

A FedEx cargo flight from Dublin to Shannon entered a holding pattern initially over North Clare and later over the South West of the county. The flight landed safely at 11.28pm after waiting for almost an hour for the weather to clear.

Another Ryanair flight from Fuerteventura routed over North Kerry and completed a single circuit before commencing an approach to Shannon. That flight landed safely at 11.22pm.

A number of flights had to enter holding patterns away from Shannon until the thunderstorm activity cleared.

Sunday, 7.30pm – Further to the earlier rain warning, Met Éireann has now issued a Status Yellow Thunderstorm for Munster and Co Galway.

The weather service says we can expected scattered thunderstorms this evening and say the potential impacts include localised flooding and hazardous travelling conditions.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow Rain Warning for most of Ireland for Sunday night into Monday morning.

Forecasters say a band of heavy rain will move eastwards across the country on Sunday evening and into Monday, with thundery downpours possible.

Potential impacts of the heavy rain could include localised flooding; difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility.

The original warning was for all of Ireland however eastern and south-eastern counties look set to escape the worst of the weather.

The warning, issued on Saturday afternoon and subject to change, will take effect at 10.00pm on Sunday and remain in place until 7.00am on Monday.

After a mainly dry start it will turn cloudier with patchy rain or drizzle at times in the afternoon and showers in the evening. Highest temperatures 20 to 23 degrees with a moderate to fresh southeasterly wind developing.

Widespread rain, heavy at times, will move across the province tonight. Lowest temperatures 13 or 14 degrees with moderate, occasionally fresh, southerly winds veering westerly with the clearance of the rain.

Monday

Mainly dry and sunny tomorrow, Monday. Highest temperatures 18 to 22 degrees with light to moderate westerly winds.
