A flight from Germany to Mexico has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon after the crew declared a medical emergency over the Atlantic.
Condor flight CFG-114 departed Frankfurt at around 10.15am (Irish time) and was bound for Cancun. The flight was about three hours into its journey when the crew turned around confirming they had a passenger who required medical assistance.
Air traffic controllers advised authorities at Shannon Airport of the unscheduled arrival while the National Ambulance Service was also alerted and requested to dispatch resources to the airport.
Shannon Airport’s fire and rescue service was also alerted and crews mobilised to holding positions adjacent to the runway. This is standard procedure when an aircraft has to make an ‘overweight’ landing which can lead to a jet’s braking system overheating.
The Airbus A330-941 jet landed at 2.14pm and was pursued along the runway by fire crews who then accompanied the jet it to its parking stand.
The flight was met at the terminal by airport staff and ambulance paramedics. The patient was assessed and treated at the airport before being removed to hospital for treatment.
The flight has since resumed its journey to Cancun.
