Sinn Fein to hold day of action over rising fuel costs

Sinn Féin TD for County Clare Donna McGettigan, has announced that Sinn Féin representatives and activists will hold a statewide Day of Action tomorrow, Saturday 14th March, to highlight the soaring cost of home heating oil, petrol and diesel and the government’s continued failure to act.

Ms McGettigan said Sinn Féin will continue to keep pressure on Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to deliver urgent relief for households struggling with spiralling fuel costs.

Sha added: “In County Clare and across the state families and workers are being hammered by soaring fuel costs while Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael continue to sit on their hands.”

“I’ve been contacted by carers who will struggle to travel to the patients they care for. Some have to travel up to 44km for a single visit, how are they supposed to afford the extra travel expenses? I was glad to see the road hauliers were able to lobby to get the help they needed, but carers don’t have the power of a lobby. Yet, if they are not able to provide care for people, what will become of them?”

“Tomorrow Sinn Féin representatives and activists will be out in communities across the country as part of a nationwide Day of Action to highlight the growing hardship being caused by the skyrocketing cost of home heating oil, petrol and diesel.”

Deputy McGettigan said the Day of Action is part of Sinn Féin’s determination to force the government to act ahead of the return of the Dáil.

“The pressure on households is enormous and people cannot wait any longer for action.”

“People cannot afford for Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and their Independent allies to remain spectators while households are hammered. Sinn Féin will continue to raise this issue at every opportunity and when the Dáil returns tackling soaring fuel costs will be our first order of business.”

“I am urging all Clare Government TDs to support Sinn Féin’s Mineral Oil Tax (Emergency Cost of Living Reduction) Bill, which would cut excise on petrol, diesel and home heating oil in order to bring prices down and deliver immediate relief to households.”
