Clare County Council is inviting applications for the newly expanded Historic Structures Fund Conservation Advice Scheme for Traditional Houses.
The expanded scheme is designed to support owners of traditional houses in obtaining specialist conservation advice. Funding of up to 67 per cent of eligible costs, to a maximum of €5,000, is available towards the preparation of a specialist conservation report.
A wide range of buildings may benefit from the scheme, including Protected Structures, traditional homes located within Architectural Conservation Areas and traditional farmhouses that do not have statutory protection. Due to their age and traditional methods of construction, these properties often require specialist advice when undertaking conservation works, energy upgrades or fire safety alterations.
Previously limited to vacant traditional houses, the scheme has now been revised to broaden eligibility and encourage greater uptake. Owners may now apply in respect of buildings that are already occupied. Funding is also available for fire safety reports where traditional buildings are being converted to multi‑occupancy residential use above commercial premises. In addition, applicants participating in the SEAI Traditional Homes Pilot may apply for funding towards the cost of a pre‑works risk assessment, aimed at improving energy efficiency while safeguarding the historic character of the building.
By offsetting part of the cost of engaging expert professional advice, the Conservation Advice Scheme assists owners in avoiding inappropriate or damaging works, supports the use of suitably qualified professionals and skilled tradespeople, and helps to ensure value for money in the delivery of conservation projects.
The revised scheme supports the objectives of the Delivering Homes, Building Communities 2025–2030 plan and the National Residential Retrofit Plan.
