Clare Civil Defence was acknowledged at a Clare County Council Civic Reception last evening, in recognition of the organisation’s decades of voluntary commitment to communities across the county.
Speaking at the event, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Paul Murphy, described the reception as a fitting acknowledgement of the invaluable contribution made by Civil Defence volunteers, noting that their work has been a “constant source of reassurance to the people of Clare” over more than 75 years of service.
Clare Civil Defence has long played a vital role in supporting emergency services and the wider community. Involved in more than a hundred events annually, their work spans emergency response, public event safety, search and rescue operations as well as assistance during severe weather events. Delivered entirely on a voluntary basis, this service has had a profound and lasting impact across the county.
In attendance were multiple generations of Clare Civil Defence members as well as retirees, councillors, staff of Clare County Council and representatives of the Department of Defence and An Garda SĂochána.
At the reception, Cllr Murphy highlighted not only the breadth of support provided by Civil Defence, but also the spirit in which it is delivered. He said, “In times of crisis, communities rely on people who are prepared to step forward, often in difficult and challenging circumstances. Clare Civil Defence has consistently answered that call, providing calm, capable support when it is needed most.”
Cllr Murphy also emphasised that the civic reception represents sincere gratitude for the dedication shown by volunteers over many decades. He added, “As we reflect on the 75th anniversary of Civil Defence nationally in 2025, it is fitting that we take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding commitment of volunteers here in County Clare, whose service has made a real and lasting difference to so many.”

Civil Defence Officer with Clare County Council, Steven Hayes said, “It is fantastic to see our Civil Defence volunteers acknowledged for the work they do. I cannot stress enough how much time they give up, and never are we let down. I am incredibly proud to be your Civil Defence Officer, and it is a privilege to work alongside such a selfless and dedicated group of people.”
Technical Communications Officer, Civil Defence Branch of The Department of Defence, Justin McGinn said, “The Department of Defence greatly values the voluntary contribution each of you make in maintaining high training standards and readiness to serve your communities when called upon.”
