Hill climber airlifted to hospital after Burren fall

A hill climber has been airlifted to hospital after sustaining an injury in a fall in North Clare this afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3.00pm on Gleninagh Mountain in the Burren in the North West of the county. It’s understood that a group of four had been hiking in the area when the accident occurred on the lower plateau of the mountain.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was tasked to the scene while the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter was also requested to assist.

Rescue 115, which had already been in the air, was able to respond to the scene quickly.

The casualty, who is understood to have suffered a head injury, was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for treatment.
