Holiday Flight diverts to Shannon with ill passenger

A Ryanair flight from the UK to the Canary Islands in Spain has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon after the crew declared a medical emergency.

Flight FR-2131departed Manchester Airport in England shortly after 3.00pm bound for Lanzarote. There were 182 passengers and crew on board.

The Boeing 737-Max-8200 jet was about 130 kilometres south of Ireland when the crew issued a Pan-pan radio call and informed air traffic controllers of their situation. A Pan-pan is not as serious as a May-day call but still indicates an urgency on board.

The crew were cleared to turn around and reroute to Shannon where airport authorities had been notified of the unscheduled arrival. The National Ambulance Service was also alerted and requested to dispatch resources to the airport.

The flight landed at Shannon at 4.25pm and was met on arrival at the terminal by airport authorities and ambulance paramedics.

The patient was assessed at the airport before being transported to hospital for further treatment.

The flight continued its journey to Lanzarote shortly after 5.30pm.
