Charity Kayak from Fermanagh to Killaloe

Peter Brewitt, Ger Harrington and James Lynch set for 220km challenge
Peter Brewitt, Ger Harrington and James Lynch set for 220km challenge
On Wednesday next (16th June) a team of three men will paddle from Lough Erne in Fermanagh, across the Shannon-Erne waterway and down the River Shannon to Killaloe in Co. Clare to raise badly needed funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Peter Brewitt, Ger Harrington and James Lynch hope to complete the 220km challenge in 5 days.

Like all voluntary organisations in the country, the IMNDA is grossly underfunded and relies largely on public donation and fundraising efforts.

Team member James Lynch from Clare said: “In 2012, one of our group, Ger Harrington, lost his mother to the dreadful disease. We would now like to honour her memory by doing some fundraising for the IMNDA, without whom Ger’s family would have been in a very much worse place.”

“Earlier this year we got together and decided to kayak from Lough Erne to Killaloe via the Shannon-Erne waterway and raise funds via sponsorship for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA). The association helped Ger’s mam & family throughout her final months and they continue to help so many others afflicted by this terrible disease,” James added.

The Kayakers

Ger Harrington is originally from Limerick but now lives in near Killaloe in Clare. A member of An Garda Síochána, Ger is stationed in Co. Tipperary. It is in memory of Ger’s mother Carmel that this trip is being undertaken. Ger started kayaking as a teenager with Limerick Canoe Club.

Peter Brewitt is originally from Cork, now lives in Clare, and has been kayaking from an early age also. Peter works out of Co. Tyrone and travels extensively for work.

James Lynch is originally from the Killaloe area of Clare and currently resides in Galway where he works for TG4, the Irish language TV station.

In 2014, James became the first person to swim the length of Ireland’s longest lake, Lough Derg.

“Thus far we have received great support from many kayaking and outdoor activity shops in terms of kit & gear that is necessary for the journey. We are hoping that the public will get behind the cause & support us as we travel through all 4 provinces on our way from Lough Erne to Killaloe at the bottom of Lough Derg,” James said.

The lads  have established an event page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/kayak4mnd/ where they will post regular updates on their training and indeed once they commence their journey.
