Almost one tonne of rubbish was collected during a cleanup of the River Fergus in Ennis town centre this week.
Organised by Clare Civil Defence and Clare County Council, the cleanup was completed by the Environment Section of Clare County Council and was supported by the Ennis Tidy Towns Committee, local volunteers and members of the Ennis Sub Aqua Club.
It took place along the River Fergus from Wood Quay Carpark to Steeles Terrace in Lifford resulting in the collection of 880kgs of waste items ranging from bicycles to shopping trolleys and from glass bottles to plastic bags and traffic cones.
All collected material was transported by Clare County Council to the Central Waste Management Facility at Ballyduffbeg for recycling. The cleanup took place just weeks ahead of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann when an estimated 400,000 people are expected to visit Ennis.
