Man rescued from river near Clarecastle

A man in his 60’s was rescued from the River Fergus near Clarecastle last night.

Gardaí were alerted around 9.30pm to a man in distress close to the bridge on the N85 ring-road near Clareabbey. Gardaí went to the scene and located in the water man beneath the bridge.

Three units of the fire brigade from Ennis, including a specialist Swift Water Rescue Team, were sent to the scene. The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was also alerted but were later stood down.

Members of An Garda attempted to reach the man by wading into the water however fire service SRT personnel brought the man to safety. He was transferred into the care of the ambulance service.

Meanwhile, as emergency crews were dealing with the incident, a two-car collision happened close by.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene where they found the female driver of one of the vehicles complaining of chest pain.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the woman was removed to hospital for treatment.

The two occupants of the other vehicle were unhurt.
