Clare Libraries investment to enhance overall experience

Clare Libraries has been awarded €88,516 to support a range of enhancements that will improve accessibility, inclusion, digital connectivity and the overall library experience for communities across County Clare.

The funding will support public libraries through four key measures: sensory equipment and facilities, accessibility upgrades, ICT and broadband speed enhancements and upgrades to furniture and operational equipment.

Clare Libraries will use the funding to purchase a range of sensory toys and equipment for library branches throughout the county. This includes the installation of a Cubbie sensory pod in the Seán Lemass Library in Shannon, sensory projectors for the William Smith O’Brien Library in Newmarket-on-Fergus and Ennis’ De Valera Library, and a portable sensory room for the Edna O’Brien Library in Scarriff. Funding will also be used to provide age-friendly tables and seating, together with new furniture for children’s areas.

The funding comes as part of a wider announcement by Minister of State with special responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Jerry Buttimer TD, and Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, of over €3 million in funding for public libraries nationwide under the Libraries Capital Programme.

Acting Clare County Librarian, Cora Gunter welcomed the funding, saying, “We are delighted to receive this investment of €88,516 under the Libraries Capital Programme. Libraries continue to evolve as essential community spaces that support learning, wellbeing, inclusion and connection. This funding will allow us to enhance sensory facilities, improve accessibility and create even more welcoming environments for people of all ages and abilities. These enhancements will ensure our public libraries remain vibrant, modern and accessible spaces where every member of the community can connect, learn and thrive.”

Executive Librarian at Shannon Library, Caroline Aherne added, “The introduction of a Cubbie sensory pod in Shannon Library will be a valuable addition to our services and will provide a supportive, calming space for library users who may benefit from sensory regulation and quiet reflection. Alongside the new sensory equipment being introduced across the county, these improvements demonstrate Clare Libraries’ commitment to creating inclusive spaces that meet the diverse needs of our communities.”

The Libraries Capital Programme investment is designed to strengthen public libraries as inclusive and digitally connected community hubs. Through improvements to sensory facilities, accessibility infrastructure, ICT hardware and furnishings, libraries will be better equipped to meet the changing needs of communities and support lifelong learning, social inclusion and digital participation.

Clare Libraries continues to play a vital role in the social, educational and cultural life of County Clare, providing free access to information, technology, learning opportunities and community engagement. This latest investment will help ensure that library services remain accessible, innovative and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
