The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was tasked on Sunday afternoon to respond and assist six people on board a vessel that had suffered engine problems on Lough Derg.
The team was alerted by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry at around 5.00pm.
The volunteer crew launched their rescue boat from Pier Head Killaloe and requested to locate a 22ft powerboat reported to be in difficulty in the area off TwoMileGate in Co Clare.
While approaching the scene, the rescue boat crew observed that the casualty vessel had been taken on tow by another powerboat.
A Coast Guard crew member was transferred to the casualty vessel and the tow was transferred to the Coast Guard boat.
At around 6.00pm, the casualty vessel was safely along side at Harbour Village Killaloe where a Coast Guard shore team had been on standby having made their way to the location by road.
Earlier in the day, Killaloe Coast Guard was tasked to assist at an incident in Youghal Bay on the Tipperary shore. The team had been requested by An Garda Síochána to respond to the scene but were stood down en route.
The Lough RNLI lifeboat crew dealt with the incident.
