Cruiser with engine trouble towed to safety on Lough Derg

A cruise boat, reported to have suffered engine problems at the northern end of Lough Derg this evening, was towed to safety by a passing powerboat.

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was alerted shortly before 4.30pm by watch officers at the Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.

Staff there had received a report of a cruiser with engine difficulty south of Portumna, Co Galway.

A Coast Guard boat crew launched from their base at Pier Head Killaloe while a shore team responded by road to Dromineer Harbour in Co Tipperary.

When the Coast Guard boat crew arrived on scene they found that the casualty vessel had been taken on tow by the operator of a powerboat who came to their assistance.

The cruiser towed to Terryglass Harbour and safely tied up. The Coast Guard crew was then stood down.
