Busy afternoon for Clare’s emergency services

A woman has escaped injury following a single-vehicle collision in Shannon this evening.

The crash occurred shortly before 6.00pm at the junction of the R472 Airport Road and Bóthar Na Luachra outside the Shannon Aviation Museum.

An elderly woman is understood to have lost control of her car and collided with a set of traffic lights. The junction was largely closed and traffic diverted away from the area as a result.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon station were mobilised to the incident while additional crews were dispatched from Ennis station. They were however stood down en route.

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) and Gardaí also attended the scene.

The woman was assessed by a NAS advanced paramedic but she did not require hospital treatment.

While firefighters were dealing with the incident, they were alerted to reports of a house fire at Cronan Lawn a short distance from the scene of the collision.

One crew was dispatched from the scene to the scene while additional resources from Ennis were alerted and requested to attend also. Once it was clear the fire was not serious, the Ennis crews were allowed stand down and return to base.

Meanwhile, an elderly woman has been treated for minor burns after a small fire in her car in Ennis this afternoon.

Emergency services received a report of a vehicle on fire in the Market area of the town at around 3.30pm.

On arrival at the scene, firefighters found that a small fire had started inside the car believed to have been caused by a ‘jetflame lighter’ which the woman had ignited accidentally. The flame began to burn the plastic fittings inside the car and the woman attempted to extinguish the fire herself sustaining injuries to a hand.

Fire crews administered first aid to the woman who was not seriously injured. However, because there was no ambulance available in the area at the time, the woman was advised to attend the minor injuries unit at Ennis General Hospital to have her burns treated.

Earlier, emergency services dealt with a collision on the N18 at Bunratty.

Also today, fire crews from Ennistymon station dealt with a serious oil spillage on the Inagh to Miltown Malbay road. At least one minor collision was reported to have resulted from the spillage.
