Clare County Council has been awarded the Smarter Travel Mark at Bronze level, recognising its ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable and active travel among staff and visitors.
The Smarter Travel Mark is a prestigious certification that acknowledges organisations actively supporting sustainable travel options, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and a more engaged workforce.
Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Alan O’Callaghan said, “These efforts directly contribute to the implementation of the Clare Climate Action Plan 2024-2029, which outlines the county’s strategy for reducing emissions and promoting sustainability across all sectors. Clare County Council is proud to be one of only a small number of Local Authorities in the country to have achieved this mark of recognition.”
The TFI Smarter Travel Programme is a national voluntary behaviour change programme managed by the National Transport Authority. Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority, explained, “The Smarter Travel Mark is recognition of Clare County Council’s commitment to changing attitudes and behaviours regarding cycling, public transport usage and carpooling by implementing measures that facilitate, support and encourage sustainable travel options for its workforce and visitors. Achieving the Smarter Travel Mark demonstrates that Clare County Council prioritises the importance and value of sustainable travel initiatives and the associated environmental benefits.”
As a Bronze level recipient, Clare County Council has implemented a range of initiatives, including cycle facilities, staff e-bikes, changing rooms, and behaviour change campaigns, all aimed at encouraging sustainable commuting.
Highlighting the local authority’s commitment to supporting active travel, Chief Executive, Clare County Council, Pat Dowling said, “This award reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and the well-being of our staff and the wider community. We are proud to be recognised for our efforts and will continue to promote smarter travel choices.”
This achievement also marks its designation as a TFI Smarter Travel Workplaces Partner, further reinforcing its dedication to reducing single-person car usage and fostering a healthier, greener community.
