The current season of the Clare Museum Lecture Series will conclude with a talk by Caroline Corballis entitled ‘The Folklore of the Caves of Clare’. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, May 13, at 7.30pm in the Clare County Council managed Clare Musuem.
Caroline Corballis has compiled a database of references from the National Folklore Schools Collection of caves in Co Clare. She is currently working in the field, trying to identify as many of the cave sites as possible, while taking into account their archaeology and more recent folklore.
The aim of her research is to investigate the interaction between archaeology, folklore and the mythology of caves, while understanding how caves were perceived in the 1930s. Caroline Corballis will share her research during this talk.
Caroline Corballis was an active member of the Trinity College Dublin Caving Club in the 1970s. She is an archaeology research student at ATU, Sligo working on a masters’ thesis on the Archaeology and Folklore of Caves, under the supervision of the well-respected cave archaeologist, Marion Dowd.
The talk begins at 7:30pm and admission is free of charge. While entry is free, with a high level of interest in the talk expected, those attending are asked to book a seat in advance by emailing claremuseum@clarecoco.ie. Telephone bookings cannot be accepted.
A new season of Clare Museum’s Lecture Series will resume in October 2026.
