Clare FM will feature the world radio premiere of a new play by two local authors on St. Stephen’s Day at 6pm.
‘Redemption’ is a compelling tale of a local GAA club – and a community – fighting for its very life. The Kiltumper club has just one match left – against their bitterest rivals from Knocklosh – to avoid the drop to Intermediate status and the possible end of the club.
It’s written by local authors Joe Considine and Don Garry, and produced and directed by the IMRO award winning team of Alan Meaney and Jason Gill.
Side by side with the club’s struggle is the plight of a community blighted by emigration. The two young Boland boys, key players for the team, are about to leave for Australia, they may not even be around for the vital match, and their parents, Mikey and Mary, face the bitter prospect of an empty home.
‘Redemption’ is also the tale of Pat ‘The Tank’ Shaughnessy, the one time footballing hero who has gone to the bad. Will team boss Jim Burke’s plan to bring Pat back into the fold prove to be a disaster, or will it be the magic spark that Kiltumper needs to save itself?
Replete with unforgettable and lovable characters, as well as hilarious moments, ‘Redemption’ is a play about community and shared values in an uncertain future.
According to director Jason Gill ‘as a snapshot of a community in crisis, ‘Redemption’ is extremely powerful. It’s a very compelling picture of rural Ireland as it is now, the truth of it rather than what people want you to believe, and there are things in here that everybody listening will recognize.’
The play stars an array of very talented actors from drama groups all over Clare and East Galway, including the highly regarded Ennis Players and Corofin. It features fantastic performances from Arthur Ford, Gerard Howard, Maeve Plunkett, Bosco Clarke, Martin O’ Donoghue and many more.
So do something different this Christmas. Relive the golden days of radio drama with a wonderful play that is all about family, community and the GAA. What could be more perfect this Christmas season?
‘Redemption’ airs on Clare FM at 6pm on St Stephen’s Day, this December 26.
