A Co Clare man is about to set off on a solo trek across Iceland to raise funds for the Irish Dogs for the Disabled charity.
French Foreign Legion veteran and Ennis native Dermot Cosgrove, who lives in Kilkee, will walk up to 500 kilometres across Iceland. The trek is expected to take him three weeks.
Dermot flew home from his overseas job yesterday to collect his equipment and see family before he departs for Iceland tomorrow.
Dermot said: “I will set off from Húsavík in Northern Iceland on the 2nd of June and cross the Highlands over 21 days to reach Vík on the south coast. The distance should be between 480 and 500kms.”
This is a personal challenge but I will also be raising fundings for Irish Dogs for the Disabled for whom I’ve raised over €3,000 so far but every donation will make a difference and will be gratefully accepted.”
Dogs for the Disabled is a National Charity established in 2007 and the only one of its kind in Ireland. Enhancing the quality of lives for children and adults, who have varying degrees of physical disabilities.
Their mission is to provide fully trained Assistance Dogs to assist in everyday activities and in doing so improving their quality of life. Their Assistance Dogs are provided free of charge and our charity receives no government funding.
