Efforts underway to make site of building collapse safe

A clean-up operation is due to get underway this morning following a partial building collapse in East Clare on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 5.30pm on the R461 Feakle Road out of Scarriff just a hundred metres from the centre of the town.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from nearby Scarriff station responded to the incident along with Gardaí.

On arrival, fire crews found that a retaining wall at the rear of a building had collapsed onto the back of a nearby house causing some damage. A concrete staircase and fencing also collapsed into the ground surrounding the house.

A shed on neighbouring land was also extensively damaged. Nobody was injured in the incident however.

The scene was cordoned off while the road was also closed for a short time while council crews erected protective fencing around the site.

A further assessment of the area was due to take place this morning in daylight while efforts to make the site safe are also planned.

A building contractor arrived at the site this morning and carried out further work to secure the area.
