Infant boy killed in road traffic incident

Update: It’s now understood that the young child was just 18 months old and that accident occurred at a halting site at Ballaghboy a short distance from Ennis.

A vehicle has since been removed from the scene for a technical investigation.

A young child has died following a tragic accident in Ennis this afternoon.

Gardaí have confirmed they are attending the scene of a “fatal road traffic incident’ which occurred a residential area on Quin Road on the outskirts of the town. The incident occurred at around 12.30pm.

Gardaí and National Ambulance Service paramedics responded to the incident along with Cork-based Emergency Aeromedical Service air ambulance, AeroMed01.

A Garda spokesperson has confirmed that “A male infant was transferred from the scene to University Hospital Limerick. He has since been pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.”

A family liaison officer is being appointed to support the family at this time.

The scene was preserved pending an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators.
