Man hospitalised following rock climbing accident

A man has been taken to hospital after he was injured in a fall while rock climbing in North Clare this afternoon.

The alarm was raised at around 1.45pm when emergency services were notified of the accident at Ballyreen, a popular climbing location on the coast road between Doolin and Fanore.

Volunteers from the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard were tasked to the incident along with National Ambulance Service paramedics. It’s understood that the man in his 40s, who was climbing with another person, fell about 10 metres (32 feet).

He was assessed at the scene by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. He is understood to have sustained back and shoulder injuries which are not believed to be serious.

The area where the accident occurred is a popular climbing site and regularly used by amateur climbers as well as by Defence Forces personnel and mountain rescue teams for training exercises.
