A passing garda patrol was alerted to a woman in the River Fergus and one member entered the river to save the woman while another called for further assistance.

A woman who hear the commotion outside her window is also understood to have jumped into the water to help. The woman helped the casualty up the ladder and the pair were cared for by gardaí until an ambulance arrived.

Two units of Ennis fire and rescue service, including a specialist river rescue team, had also been alerted but were stood down once it had been confirmed the casualty had been taken to safety.

The woman was assessed by paramedics before being removed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
