A search has resumed for a young boy reported missing at the Cliffs of Moher in North Clare yesterday.
The alarm was raised shortly after 2.00pm on Tuesday by the child’s family who are believed to be visiting Ireland from overseas.
It’s understood the boy became separated from his family who quickly began to search for him. When there was no sign of the child, they returned to the visitor centre and raised the alarm.
Gardaí were first alerted while the Irish Coast Guard were also notified of the situation. Watch officers at the Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry promptly mounted a search operation.
The Doolin unit of the Coast Guard was also tasked to the scene. Volunteers launched their Delta rigid inflatable boat (RIB) while other members made their way to the location by road to carry out a search of the cliff top area.
The Shannon based Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 115, and the Aran Islands all-weather lifeboat were also requested to assist with the operation.
Early this morning, members of Clare Civil Defence travelled to the area and launched a drone in an effort to locate the child. Conditions were poor at the time and they improved for a time, visibility is being hampered by heavy mist.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí, the RNLI, the Coast Guard and local search and rescue services are conducting a search operation in the vicinity of the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare following reports of a missing male juvenile on Tuesday afternoon, 23rd July 2024. Searches have resumed this morning.”
