A fee of €2 million has been approved by Irish Water for the replacement of 12.6km of old water mains in West Clare.

Details were provided to elected members of the West Clare Municipal District at its January sitting, following a query from Cllr Christy Curtin. Works are expected to commence in the summer on the replacing of the mains which have been in place since approximately 1970.

Curtin asked “That in light of the recurring water outage again on Christmas Day in the Miltown Malbay area, Irish Water outline the cause and the schedule with timeframe of remedial works to ensure a consistent water supply to this part of West Clare for 2017 and onwards”.

Senior Engineer, Sean Ward acknowledged the Independent Cllr’s concerns. “Several stretches of water main between Mullagh and Miltown have to be renewed as they have a significant history of bursts. One such burst occurred in the vicinity of the Crosses of Annagh late on Christmas Day, and was repaired on St Stephen’s Day”.

Irish Water has approved €2 million for the replacement of 12.6km of old watermains, consisting of 6.6km from Mullagh to Miltown Malbay and 6.0km from Old Doolough to Mullagh.

Ward highlighted a 4.3km stretch from Mullagh to Annagh Bridge as a priority. He stated that tender documents will be complete in the first quarter of 2017 while a contractor will be appointed in or around July.
