Two people have been taken to hospital following a rollover road traffic collision in Co Clare this evening.
The incident occurred at around 7.30pm in the northbound lanes of the M18 motorway close to Junction 9 near Shannon.
The two women were injured when their car crashed into the median barrier and overturned onto its side. All the circumstances of the collision weren’t immediately clear but are being investigated by Gardaí.
Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon and Ennis stations responded to the incident along with a number of National Ambulance Service resources and Gardaí.
Fire crews had to use specialist cutting equipment to safely extricate both casualties from the vehicle. The injured were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be serious.
The M18 was closed northbound for over two hours while traffic that had backed up behind the incident was turned back on the motorway and redirected up the onramp and diverted via Newmarket on Fergus.
The incident was cleared and the motorway reopened at around 9.45pm.
